By the numbers

We must rethink our global food systems to protect farm animals and the planet. At Humane World for Animals, we're combining science, advocacy, and corporate engagement to persuade food companies, financial institutions, governments, and producers to improve the welfare of farmed animals and transition toward a more humane food system.

94.9 billion
land animals

are kept and slaughtered for food globally each year, most confined in industrial factory farms.

84.6 billion
chickens

suffer annually in cramped conditions — raised for meat or caged for egg production.

2,000+
food companies

have pledged to eliminate cage confinement for hens and pigs in their supply chains.

Inhumane farming methods

Industrial animal agriculture is one of the largest drivers of animal suffering worldwide. Billions of animals endure extreme confinement in cages or crates so small they can barely move, denying them the ability to express natural behaviors.

A confined life: Hens in battery cages

Hens used for egg production are packed into tiny wire cages, each given less space than a standard sheet of paper. Denied natural behaviors like dust bathing and perching, these hens are slaughtered at around 2 years old, though in natural conditions they could live 7 years or longer.

Cycle of cruelty: pigs in gestation crates

Pregnant pigs in factory farms are confined in metal gestation crates so narrow they can’t turn around. They remain trapped for four months of pregnancy, then moved to equally restrictive farrowing crates to nurse piglets, repeating this cycle until slaughter at just 5 or 6 years old  -- far below their natural lifespan.

Bad for animals, bad for the planet

Factory farming isn’t just cruel, it’s also a major environmental threat. Animal agriculture produces over 16.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, rivaling emissions from the entire transportation sector. Shifting toward humane, sustainable farming practices and plant-based food systems is critical for animal welfare and climate action.

Speak up for farm animals

More than 94.9 billion farmed animals are kept and killed for food each year, causing immense animal suffering and releasing greenhouse gas emissions at levels on par with all cars, planes, trains and boats around the world combined. We need to prevent the suffering of animals on factory farms and protect the world around us.

What is factory farming?

Many people have a vague idea, but few know the true extent of the horrors in these massive operations. Animals are cruelly confined for their entire lives in these brutal and violent places where the only way out is a horrific death. Most are denied any opportunity to express their natural behaviors, and will never breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet.
