Bureau of Land Management failures lead to betrayal and slaughter of wild horses, New York Times investigation shows

WASHINGTON—Humane World for Animals and Humane World Action Fund condemn the Bureau of Land Management’s enabling of a pathway that has resulted in circumvention of the longstanding congressional prohibition on wild horse slaughter. This comes in the wake of a New York Times story which reports that thousands of wild horses and burros have been sold to slaughterhouses across our borders since early 2025.

WAYANAD, KERALA—Animal protection organization Humane World for Animals India (formerly called Humane Society International/India), in collaboration with Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Pookode, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on "Emergency Care and Response for Animals during Disasters."  The initiative has been implemented with the philanthropic support of the Tata Trusts.

Berkeley County, S.C.—Humane World for Animals, formerly called the Humane Society of the United States, is assisting the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office in the rescue of over 40 dogs and puppies from an alleged cruelty situation which involves conditions commonly seen in dogfighting operations. Charleston Animal Society also assisted on scene.

ROME—Fourteen students from a private school in Rome, Zaveria Cassia Institute, recently took part in a training session on dogfighting. What’s happening with grizzly bears and the Endangered Species Act in the United States?

WASHINGTON—The grizzly bear population in the Lower 48 states, along with decades of conservation progress and billions of dollars in public investment, is at serious risk because of a July 2026 announcement by the U.S. Department of the Interior that it intends to turn grizzly bear management over to the states. Following the announcement, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally proposed policy changes to how grizzly bears are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
