Kroger promised to eliminate cruel cages for egg‑laying hens. Now the grocery giant has backed away from its pledge, leaving millions of animals suffering across the U.S. Shoppers across the country are calling on Kroger to do better. Take action today and urge Kroger to keep its animal welfare commitments.

Did you know?

Extreme confinement causes enormous suffering. These intelligent, deeply feeling animals are forced to eat, sleep and defecate in the same space and are denied almost everything natural to them.

Kroger’s failed animal welfare promises

In 2016, Kroger pledged to eliminate cruel cages for egg-laying hens in its supply chain by 2025.

But the company more recently backtracked and announced that it will not be following through on its promise. In contrast, many household brands and known companies operating in the U.S., such as Costco, Amazon, McDonald's, IHOP, The Cheesecake Factory and Nestlé have made good on their cage-free commitments, with some even reaching their goals ahead of schedule.

Two of Kroger’s top competitors, Target and Ahold Delhaize (which owns Food Lion, Giant, Hannaford and Stop & Shop), recently reinstated and strengthened their plans to go cage-free with concrete action steps and public reporting after pressure from Humane World and other advocates.

Kroger is—and the stores it operates, including Harris Teeter, Mariano’s and more are—responsible for millions of birds continuing to suffer in filthy, miserable cages.

Kroger should keep its promises and stop profiting from these abusive practices.

You can help farm animals

Animals on factory farms never breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet. Your generous gift will support our efforts to improve their lives and other animals in need.
