Background Saved from slaughter
Born into an industry that uses horses to make hormone replacement drugs, Cinnamon was bound for slaughter after demand for pregnant mare urine declined. In early 2005, thanks to the Ark Watch Foundation, the pregnant draft cross mare and 88 other horses were rescued from that grim fate.
Soon after, Cinnamon gave birth to Posha, who shares her sorrel-and-white pinto coloring and wavy white mane. In 2008, they were among the first residents of our 1,120-acre Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland, Oregon, founded by the Ark Watch Foundation and Humane World for Animals. The closely bonded pair have since spent every day together.
The now elderly Cinnamon roams over grassy hills during the grazing season and contentedly chomps hay in the winter. “She’s a confident mare who is one of the first in her herd to investigate new things,” says animal caregiver Kambrya Webster. “She’s living her best life at Duchess.”
