After more than two years of campaigning by Humane Society International/Europe and fellow animal advocacy groups, Romania has banned chinchilla and mink fur farming. On Tuesday, the Romanian Parliament voted with an overwhelming majority of 217 in favor of the ban, with just six against and nine abstaining or declining to vote. Once enacted, this ban will bring an end to the only two fur farm industries that exist in Romania.

The Farm Bill, a legislative package the U.S. Congress approves every five years or so to govern agricultural and food programs, has the potential to instill animal welfare and sustainability into food practices for years to come. Instead, the 2024 Farm Bill just approved in the House Agriculture Committee would undo so much progress made for animal welfare, threaten public health and create a nightmare for countless animals. 

It is the height of absurdity: There’s widespread public awareness of the immense cruelty of fur factory farming. The fashion industry is just one of many industries inflicting harm on animals while putting terrible pressure on our already-stressed environment. And yet, animals are still being born just to be killed and then skinned on fur farms. Tens of millions of wild animals such as foxes, mink and raccoon dogs are currently confined in fur factory farms across the world.

In the midst of a booming coronavirus surge across the United States, a related crisis is brewing on the nation’s mink fur farms where outbreaks have failed to be treated with the same level of concern and seriousness we have seen from other countries.

Wellesley, Massachusetts, has said a resounding “no” to fur. The town voted 140 to 64 last night (with two abstentions) to pass a ban on new fur sales, proposed by Liza Oliver, a district leader volunteer with the Humane Society of the United States.

The year 2020 has seen phenomenal progress in our work to end the use of fur.

Saks Fifth Avenue, a North American retailer synonymous with luxury fashion, announced today that it will end sales of all fur products in its stores by the end of 2022.

The momentum to end the use of fur continues to build. As state legislative sessions get under way across the United States, bills to ban fur sales have been introduced in five states so far, including Rhode Island, Oregon, Connecticut, Hawaii and New York.
