Balasore, ODISHA - In response to the devastating floods affecting thousands of people and animals across Balasore and neighboring districts in Odisha, Humane World for Animals India (previously called Humane Society International) provided over 36,000 kg of emergency feed alongside local organization Yuva Vikas Foundation, reaching 12,000 animals across the worst-affected blocks of Baliapal and Bhograi. The feed helped ensure that cattle, goats and other animals received essential nutrition at a time when regular fodder sources had been destroyed by the floodwaters, supporting both animal survival and the livelihoods of flood-impacted families.

Reports from the field found that many animals had developed illnesses such as diarrhea, skin infections and pox, likely a result of unsanitary and overcrowded shelter conditions brought on by the flooding.

Jaihari AK, disaster management team’s senior coordinator at Humane World for Animals India is deployed at the scene and said, “When we reached the flood-affected regions, we found cows, goats and other animals in dire conditions with limited access to fodder, shelter or veterinary care. With three back-to-back floods within two weeks in this area, communities haven’t had the necessary time window to grow grass or restore fodder and we found many animals confined in waterlogged shelters, without access to green grass or clean feed, creating further urgent needs. Our relief intervention will help bridge that critical survival gap for people and animals.” “We are grateful to the Animal Husbandry and Disaster Management Authority for stepping in with early relief for affected animals and communities,” he adds.

Triggered by intense rainfall and water discharge from Jharkhand, floods have affected over 100 villages in the Bhograi, Baliapal, Jaleswar and Basta blocks, severely affecting both people and animals.
