Humane World for Animals India

India has close to 70 million street dogs. We help humanely manage this population by working with veterinarians, local governments and communities on spay/neuter and promoting peaceful coexistence with street dogs. More than 400,000 dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated through our program since 2013. 

Despite being illegal in India, thousands of dogs are killed each year for the dog meat trade. In the northeastern state of Nagaland, more than 30,000 street dogs and stolen pets are captured, slaughtered and sold in live markets annually. We're working to stop this brutal killing.

Our India-based disaster response team has saved more than 250,000 animals’ lives since 2018. We assist with preparedness efforts to help communities safely evacuate with their animals before a disaster. When one strikes, we deploy quickly to provide food, water and veterinary treatment.

We helped ban animal testing of cosmetics in India and negotiated rules for pesticides and vaccines that have spared thousands of animals from severe suffering and death in needless testing. We’re working with scientists, businesses and the government to accelerate the development and use of animal-free approaches for testing and research.

We’re teaching rural communities how to avoid conflict with elephants and snakes.

We have worked with law enforcement agencies across India on animal welfare law and provided guidance to entrepreneurs and advocates passionate about improving life for animals in India.

We’re building a more animal-friendly food system by partnering with universities, hotels and restaurants to boost plant-based options and training future chefs through culinary schools.
