Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua - Humane World for Animals, in collaboration with the Northwest Poultry Farmers Association of Chihuahua, is working to accelerate the transition to the production of eggs from cage-free hens through hands-on training and farm visits. This initiative fosters constructive dialogue between egg producers and buyers, aiming to align production practices with growing market demand for higher animal welfare standards.
With the participation of 33 egg producers, the program signifies a great step forward for egg production in Chihuahua, one distinguished by improved animal welfare, operational efficiency and enhanced biosecurity. The core message: systems that reduce stress levels and prioritize animals’ welfare lead to better outcomes all around. In addition, this approach opens doors to those companies committed to sourcing eggs from cage-free hens as part of their policies for a more responsible supply chain.
The event featured speakers from Sinaloa, Jalisco, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Querétaro with participation from DIMA's Vencomatic Group®, a global leader in poultry housing and egg handling systems, and Granja Alvator, a Mexican poultry producer serving the backyard and small-scale egg market. Producers left this training equipped with practical tools to improve animal welfare, identify and develop needed infrastructure and equipment, and improve biosecurity and animal health. A new network of aligned producers emerged from this effort, many of whom will receive personalized technical support as they transition to cage-free systems.
"Cage-free doesn’t mean more complicated, it means different" said Arianna Torres, program manager, corporate relations and public policy. “With the right training and tools, producers can successfully manage systems that reintroduce essential resources like nests, which are critical for hens but absent in conventional cages. For countless producers, this shift also opens access to new markets with more stable prices.”
Many producers at the event are already transitioning or operating cage-free systems, with some pursuing animal welfare certification to ensure quality and transparency.
As consumer demand in Mexico grows for responsibly sourced products, especially those with verified animal welfare certifications, Humane World for Animals, formerly known as Humane Society International Mexico, continues to support producers with science-based guidance and dialogue to improve animal welfare. Its approach is constructive and collaborative: supporting producers in their transition with clear criteria, performance standards, and traceability enforceable by buyers, empowering producers and companies alike to eliminate cage confinement.
