Humane World for Animals conducted this emergency relief work in collaboration with The Red Cross Society of India, local partners (Compassion for Animal Welfare Association Punjab and Save Animals Save Humanity Welfare Society), volunteers from Punjab, and the Animal Husbandry department. The relief operation was also supported by Mars in India, which stepped in to provide pet food supplies for rescued pets who were suffering in the aftermath of the Punjab floods, helping ensure they received the care and nourishment they urgently needed during a difficult time.
During the flood response, Humane World for Animals India’s disaster preparedness, relief and response team worked in severely affected districts and remote villages, including Amritsar, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, and Muktsa. The team also provided relief to more than 25,000 animals by distributing emergency feed, veterinary medicine, and essential supplies for companion and farmed animals stranded in flood-stricken areas. In addition, the team supported local caregivers and communities struggling to care for animals amid widespread displacement and loss.
The September 2025 flood, reported to be the worst since 1988, had displaced over three lakh people and impacted more than 50 lakh animals.
Jaihari A K, senior specialist, disaster response, Humane World for Animals India, who accepted the award today on behalf of the organization says: “This recognition belongs to every responder, volunteer, partner organization, and community member who stood for animals during one of the most devastating floods of Punjab and supported our efforts. Even in the remotest villages, we met people desperately trying to protect and care for their stranded animals. Their resilience, compassion, and trust strengthened our response efforts at every step.”
Humane World for Animals responds to disasters in India and around the world to assist animals and communities in need. The team has stepped in to provide emergency relief to animals affected by volcanic eruptions in Guatemala; deadly earthquakes in Nepal, Ecuador, Mexico and Türkiye; hurricanes, flash floods and cyclones in India, Haiti and Mozambique; and wildfires in Australia and Chile; as well as helping refugees and their pets fleeing the war in Ukraine.
