When animals are pulled from cruelty, neglect, or disaster, rescue is only the first step. True healing takes weeks of medical treatment, behavioral care, safe housing, and consistent human compassion.

On average, it costs $1,127 and 51 days of care to fully rehabilitate just one rescued animal. From emergency veterinary treatment to behavioral recovery and sanctuary placement, every step requires skilled professionals, specialized facilities, and steady support.

At Humane World for Animals, we work with more than 400 shelters and rescue partners nationwide to ensure every animal receives not just safety—but a real second chance at life.

Beyond the initial emergency, our continuing support turns every rescue into a true second chance.  Humane World for Animals goes where animals need us most, rescuing survivors of cruelty and disaster and providing rehabilitation to strengthen their bodies and restore their trust in humans/people. From rescue planning and coordination with law enforcement and local contacts to lifesaving treatment, costs start adding up well ahead of rescue and don't end at intake.

Animal care center costs

Although the tasks may differ from rescue to rescue, the costs of rehabilitating animals reflect the distinct needs of each situation:

When appropriate, animals receive intensive care at our dedicated facilities en route to loving homes. Some animals require more time in care to address extensive medical or behavioral issues. For some animals, care includes visits to veterinary specialists, including cardiologists, internists, orthopedic surgeons, and veterinary behaviorists to address their severe illness, injury, or trauma response.

Wild animals such as lions and tigers need specialized species-specific care and interim housing until a suitable wildlife sanctuary is identified.
