At Humane World for Animals, our work to improve the welfare of farm animals spans continents and cultures. It takes place in the villages of Viet Nam, the industrial operations of Brazil, and the farmlands of India—where our veterinarians, animal behavior scientists, and farm animal specialists have joined hands with animal producers to raise the bar for animal welfare.

Our commitment to working with producers collaboratively is long-standing. We bring people of different perspectives together through workshops and events, which we have hosted in Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia over the past decade. For instance, in 2022, we co-hosted “Pig welfare in the Americas: Implementing Global Guidelines into Regional Practice” with the Animal Welfare Collaborating Center for Chile, Uruguay and Mexico. Over two days, scientific and technical experts provided in-depth pig welfare information and translated global guidelines into regional practice. Over 300 participants from 20 different countries joined either in person or remotely, and the impacts continue through ongoing policy work.
At events such as these, we strive to make the latest advances in animal welfare science accessible and actionable for producers, and the results are tangible. In Malaysia, our 2023 program inspired the country’s first cage-free aviary egg production system and sparked the beginning of a national cage-free movement.
Humane World for Animals is part of a larger global movement to protect farm animals. We are proud to be a founding member of the International Coalition for Animal Welfare—the body of animal protection organizations officially recognized by the World Organisation for Animal Health. Through ICFAW, our technical experts have a voice in the process of shaping the global standards that guide veterinary animal welfare recommendations and farming practices worldwide. ICFAW’s network of professionals adds to our capacity to help animals in nearly every region of the world where they are farmed.
While our global campaign focus is to end intensive confinement, we don’t hesitate to assist animals in crisis. When African Swine Fever struck Vietnam in 2019, reports emerged of pigs being buried alive as a control measure. Humane World (then Humane Society International) acted swiftly to deploy veterinary experts to work with local authorities, offering more humane euthanasia options. That moment sparked the beginning of a series of training programs in 2020, 2022, and 2025.

In 2025, through our work with ICFAW, we facilitated a Training of Trainers program on pig welfare to government Veterinary Services departments of four southeast Asian countries. Delivered by the WOAH Animal Welfare Collaborating Center at the University of Melbourne, the program brought together and trained participants from Viet Nam, Thailand, Cambodia and Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, who then developed teaching materials on key topics such as animal welfare science fundamentals, group housing for sows, and emergency euthanasia options. Each country sent five experts in disease control and farm support who strengthened their knowledge of pig welfare and gained the skills to share their learnings with other officials, emergency responders and directly to producers in their respective countries.
While every country is unique, our global collaboration and knowledge sharing allow us to deliver solutions that work across borders. Everywhere we go, we meet people who care deeply about animals, and their compassion drives our mission forward. Together, with farmers who share this vision, we are building a more humane world for animals, one farm, one community, one country at a time.
You can help farm animals
Animals on factory farms never breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet. Your generous gift will support our efforts to improve their lives and other animals in need.
