What we are working on

As part of the European Union, Romania follows EU rules regarding animal welfare. The country also has a 2014 Law on the Protection of Animals, which helps counter many forms of cruelty. Top animal–related issues in Romania include farm animal welfare, access to care for companion animals and human-wildlife conflicts.

Chickens

David Paul Morris

Farm animal welfare

Industrial farms cause animal suffering on an unimaginable scale. In Romania, our work to improve farm animal welfare includes ending the cage confinement of hens in the egg industry. Additionally, more than 300 million chickens are killed for food in Romania each year—most raised in conditions that don’t allow them to express crucial natural behaviors. We help producers embrace higher welfare methods and help companies adopt higher welfare procurement policies.

Dogs in Romania

Caring for street dogs

With up to 1 million dogs roaming the country—many facing disease, malnutrition, or even euthanasia if caught—Romania needs a more comprehensive street dog management strategy. We’re partnering with Ilfov County Council's Animal Protection Department to address the problem through innovative, humane solutions.

Access to care

Many regions in Romania faces significant challenges when it comes to caring for companion animals, especially communities in industrial zones and on former military sites. Many people struggle to afford veterinary services or don’t have access to them. Humane World for Animals works closely with local groups to offer support, including via a mobile veterinary program that brings services to families and their pets.
